Can These Be Made Ahead of Time?

Healthier French Toast Recipe

If you want to make a healthier version of your beloved French toast, you can make my baked French toast sticks and use hearty whole-grain bread. Cut back on the sugar and syrup, trying agave or other healthy substitutes. Try this baked French toast recipe and you’ll be hooked!

How to Freeze French Toast Sticks

Let the oven French toast sticks cool on a wire rack, then place them on a baking sheet in an even layer. Freeze the French toast sticks and transfer them to a freezer bag once firm enough.

To reheat the frozen French toast sticks, bake them at 350 degrees F for 10 to 15 minutes, or until heated through.

Can I Use Another Type of Bread?

If you can’t find Texas toast, I recommend using another thick white bread that can be cut into sticks. You may need to visit your local bakery and see what soft, tall loaves of bread they have available.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line an 18 by 13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl whisk together sugar and cinnamon, set aside.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, vigorously whisk together milk, eggs, vanilla and salt until very well blended. Cut each slice of bread into even three strips (you can layer a few slices to cut several at a time). Dip each portion (I usually dip 2 sticks at a time) into egg mixture then lift and let excess run off and transfer to prepared baking sheet (they will have to fit closely together but leave just a little space between them).
  • Using a basting brush, brush tops of french toast sticks lightly with 1 Tbsp of the melted butter. Sprinkle tops evenly with half of the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 13 minutes. Remove from oven, flip french toast sticks to opposite side and brush tops lightly with remaining 1 Tbsp melted butter and sprinkle evenly with remaining cinnamon sugar mixture. Return to oven and continue to bake until cooked through, about 13 - 18 minutes longer. Let cool for a few minutes. Brush lightly with a little more melted butter if desired and serve warm with maple syrup for dipping.

My experience…I did not use parchment and used foil as per another comment and lightly buttered it. They really stuck! Next batch I only used the aluminum sheet and sprayed with Pam. They did not stick. They are good and I will freeze them for our boat trip. I put a baggie of frozen blueberries in with the container. Thanks for the idea.

Need to prep the night before to take a large batch fresh to Sunday school. Can I whisk together milk, eggs, vanilla and salt the night before and put in fridge to use the following morning?

  • Kris

Made this tonight for Brinner and everyone agreed it was the BEST French toast. Very crispy and flavorful. About the sticking, I made 1.5 of the recipe and on one pan used Reynolds parchment and the other my Amazon bulk parchment. There was a tendency to stick on the Amazon but not the Reynolds, so maybe that is the issue others had? Anyway, great recipe!

If you reheat in an oven or toaster oven they shouldn’t get soggy like the microwave.

This is fantastic!! I froze leftovers and they reheated perfectly too. I love every recipe on your page.

Texas toast is difficult to find so I use brioche sliced bread from Aldi. This will be my 4th time making this recipe. I double the batch and freeze them. We love it!

My entire family liked this recipe. We didn’t have any Texas toast or thick white bread. We used Natures Own honey wheat bread. It turned out great. Next time we will try the types of bread the recipe calls for. I bet it will be even yummier.

This was the 2nd time I made this recipe, and the family loves it. But this time my sticks stuck to the paper. Next time I’m going to try cooking spray on the pans.
