Rice Krispies Treats in Festive Tree Shapes
I don’t know who liked these more, my kids or me. Probably me because they totally took me back to being a kid.
I mean how could they not?
They are made using the classic Rice Krispies treat recipe that we all love, but instead of the classic squares they are tinted green and shaped into cones, then covered in sprinkles.
So basically a total upgrade :).
Ingredients Needed for This Recipe
- Salted butter
- Mini marshmallows
- Green gel food coloring (such as Wilton brand)
- Rice Krispies cereal
- White decorating icing (I just used store-bought)
- Reeses peanut butter cups
- Round red sprinkles
- 16 star sprinkles or yellow mini M&Ms

How to Make These Rice Krispies Treats
- Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium-low heat.
- Add in marshmallows and stir until melted, while tinting with green food coloring to reach desired shade.
- Remove from heat add in Rice Krispies cereal and fold mixture until evenly coated. Let cool about 5 minutes.
- Spray hands with non-stick cooking spray and shape about 1/3 cup to 1/2 cup of the mixture into into cones, while pressing firmly so they’ll hold together.
- Decorate with sprinkles, using the icing to get them to stick. Then put icing on the Reeses and place one under each tree.
Add Detail or Keep it Basic
With these you can decide how much work you want to put into them.
For the easiest method you can nix the icing and sprinkles then just dust them with powered sugar instead for a a snow laced tree.
I saw the idea for these on Family Circle but their recipe didn’t call for icing and luckily I’d bought some because I couldn’t get anything to stick without it.
Use a Piping Bag and Tip for More Detail
The kids added a lot more icing to theirs than I did – because it can be tedious adding a teeny tiny dot but theirs had a cute snowy look with the extra icing.
With these you can also use piping bags and tips even if using store-bought icing if you want more detail.
How to Add Sprinkles
Then if you want the sprinkles over the icing – I just poured some sprinkles into a container lid and rolled the trees over the sprinkles so they’d stick to the icing.
I’ve also seen others make these using colorful mini M&Ms for ornaments which the kids would definitely love (the more color the better, right?).
Plus I love those little bites of chocolate flavor in Rice Krispies Treats so I think I’ll go that route next year when we make them.
Use Tootsie Rolls for Mini Trees
Oh and if you want to do a few tiny trees like I did I used mini tootsie rolls (with the ends trimmed so they’d stand) for the stump instead of Reeses. Those itty bitty mini trees are my favorite.
And then pour piles and piles of powdered sugar to mimic a snowy wonderland. But really don’t, it’s a big mess to clean :).
I hope you have as much fun decorating these as I did!
