Easy Homemade Protein Drink

Are you tired of those shelf-stable protein drinks that have an incredibly long list of ingredients, many of which are hard to read and pronounce? They often leave us to wonder if they’re really healthy or more of just a marketing gimmick.

This frothy protein shake is made up of natural ingredients, it has a fresher taste, and it has a velvety delicious chocolate peanut butter flavor that will leave you craving more!

It’s also easy to customize (see ideas below) which is another great thing about making it from scratch, you can use up what you have on hand.

It makes a tempting addition to breakfast (chocolate for breakfast? Yes please!), a tasty midday snack, or a great kickstart to enjoy before a workout. And you’ll love that it tastes far more natural than many of those you’ll buy.

What’s not to love here?

Then as a side note if you are looking for more ways to use up a big jar of peanut butter powder try it in oatmeal, add to smoothies, mix in yogurt, add to pancakes, or sprinkle over fruit like apples. It’s delicious!

Ingredients needed to make a protein drink from scratch.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Drink Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 cup skim milk, preferably higher protein milk such as Fairlife
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 3 Tbsp peanut butter powder, such as this
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Dutch cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp (heaping) stevia blend, (such as this)
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt (optional)
  • Ice, for serving

How to Make a Protein Drink from Scratch

  1. In a blender combine all ingredients.
  2. Cover and process for about 10 seconds until well blended.
  3. Serve over ice or chill in the refrigerator.

What if I Don’t Own a Blender?

  • This protein shake can also be made in a mason jar with a shaker ball or in a blender bottle.
  • Just shake well and let it rest for about 30 seconds then shake again, this will help break up those tiny cocoa clumps.

Possible Variations for Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Shake

Note that calorie/fat/protein count may increase or decrease with some of these changes in this list.

  • Try it with 2 Tbsp regular peanut butter in place of the 3 Tbsp peanut butter powder. Almond butter, cashew butter, or another nut butter will work, too!
  • For a creamier option use all milk no water. Or use 2% milk in place of skim milk.
  • If you have regular cocoa powder that will work in place of Dutch process cocoa or even cacao powder.
  • Try other sweeteners. Maple syrup, honey, monk fruit sweetener, and erythritol, are all good choices (note that you’ll need a larger quantity of these noted, stevia is very concentrated). Even coconut cream or a well ripened banana could sweeten it nicely.
  • For a more chilled drink use 3/4 cup of ice instead of 1/2 cup water (to be blended with the drink).
  • I like to use a milk with a higher protein count here but you can just as well use regular milk the protein count will just be a little less. You can also add more protein with a scoop chocolate protein powder and/or a healthy dollop of greek yogurt.
  • If dairy is a problem for you, swap out the milk for a non-dairy milk like coconut, soy milk, or almond milk.
  • Blend with a frozen banana or frozen banana slices for a creamy milkshake consistency!

Shelf Life

  • This drink should keep well in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
